Kype™ Fishing ("Kype," "we," "us") built the Kype Maps and Kype Academy apps as outdoor fishing tools. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and your rights. By using the app, you agree to the practices described here.
Location Data
While Using the App: We access your location to display your position on the map, find nearby water bodies, and show relevant fishing data. This requires "While Using" permission and is only active when the app is open.
GPS Trip Recording: When you explicitly start a trip, we record your route to build your trip journal. Background location is used only during an active, user-initiated trip. Recording stops automatically when you end the trip or after 4 hours of no movement.
Home Waters Pin: If you choose to pin your home waters, that approximate location is visible to other academy members on the member map. You can remove it at any time.
Photos & Catch Data
When you log a catch, you may upload a photo and enter species, gear, location, and conditions. This data is stored in your catch log and may be visible to other members in the community feed and on the map.
We use your device's photo picker — we do not access your full photo library unless you explicitly select a photo.
Third-Party Data Sources
The app fetches data from these external services to provide map, weather, and species information:
Google Maps — map tiles, terrain, and search (subject to Google's privacy policy)
OpenStreetMap / Overpass — water body and trail data (open-source)
USGS — stream flow and gauge data (public domain)
NOAA — tide predictions (public domain)
GBIF / FishBase — species information and imagery (open data)
Offline Caching
The app caches map tiles, species images, and water body data on your device so it works in remote areas without cell service. Cached data stays on your device and is cleared when you uninstall the app or clear app data.
Data Retention
Catch logs and trips are retained until you delete them.
Cached map and image data is retained for up to 30 days and evicted on a least-recently-used basis.
Account data is retained while your account is active. You can request deletion at any time.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
Access the personal data we hold about you
Delete your account and associated data
Revoke location permissions at any time via your device settings
Export your catch log and trip history
Children's Privacy
The app is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us data, please contact us and we will delete it.
